https://www.unisalento.it/web/guest/407
The Marine Aquaculture and Fisheries Research Centre, Frigole-Lecce, represents the experimental pole of the DiSTeBA, University of Salento, for research in the sectors of fisheries and aquaculture. The Centre is located in a natural wetland of more than 100 hectares, of which 45 hectares constitutes the coastal pond Basin of Acquatina.

The Apulia region is one of the most important site for marine aquaculture in Italy with its more than 800 Km of coast and the presence of several lagoons, coastal ponds and natural wetlands. At regional level, 20 fish farms, operating in the coastal area, both on land, in-shore and off-shore, sustains the production of about 4.000 ton/year of sea bream and sea bass, representing 25 % of the Italian production. More than 35 million sea bream and bass juveniles (45% of the total Italian production) are also produced by leading commercial hatcheries operating in the Region. Ten new fish farms will begin the production in the next future. Apulian seafood is also well recognized because of mussel culture, which amount to more than 25% of the Italian production. Many research are currently conducted studying the different opportunities offered by the market in terms of traceability and safety of the seafood , welfare protection of the farmed animals and coastal environment conservation. The Apulia Region Administration has an extensive financial programme to support the research, technological development, innovation and training of the aquaculture industry and fishery. Università del Salento (former Università di Lecce) (www.unisalento.it) is a young, dynamic and fast growing institution with more than 30000 students enrolled and a choice of 9 faculties, 39 3-year undergraduate degree courses, 11 graduate courses, one of the 6 schools of excellence in Italy, and more than 1700 teaching and non-teaching staff, distributed in 19 Departments and research centres, including a Botanical Garden and the Marine Aquaculture and fisheries Research Centre of Acquatina. The University, and in particular the Department of Biological and Environmental Science and Technology, is fully equipped with modern apparatuses and instruments for any kind of chemical, physical, biological, ecological and molecular analysis.
