The Experimental Aquaculture Plant of Mazarrón is devoted to deep into the knowledge of the culture of marine mediterranean fish to develop the pre-industrial level rearing techniques and to promote the technologic transfer to the productive sector

By mid 1966, the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) is interested by the place of the Encañizadas (La Torre and El Ventorrillo) located in the sand-barrier of the Mar Menor lagoon as a suitable area for the study and development of the intensive sea farming of local fish. In 1967 a Marine Biological Laboratory with headquarters in San Pedro del Pinatar is created having a cession on the Encañizadas.
A specific Development Action Plan was approved in 1972 which includes a research project on fish farming in the place of the Encañizadas that consolidates the aquaculture as a basic activity of the COMU. Along this year is begun the new building of the COMU at the village of San Pedro del Pinatar devoting a high priority attention to the study of the marine pollution in the Mediterranean Sea as well as to the aquaculture of sea bream. Thereinafter, with the increase of the scientific staff in the frame of a new institutional scientific programme, are widened the studies in aquaculture and ecological aspects of the Mar Menor lagoon including studies on fisheries in the Western Mediterranean.
In 1990 a second COMU building was built up at the village of Mazarrón fully devoted to marine aquaculture. These facilities gives to scientists the adequate infrastructure to face future challenges with the suitable means requires to develop marine science.
